Beat The Summer Reading Slide

With summer approaching rather quickly, many kids look forward to not having school - - and in our case, continuing to not have school! Did you know that in that time of summertime fun, with less structure and activities, many children return to school having regressed academically by two months?

This doesn’t have to be! There are many ways we can incorporate learning into our everyday lives, including summer break. Prevent that summer slide with these 7 helpful tips!

  1. Develop a reading routine such as reading before bed for 15-20 minutes.

  2. Cook together. Have your child read the recipe and use those math skills for measuring ingredients.

  3. Build new vocabulary by picking one new word each week.

  4. Read the book before watching the movie.

  5. When reading, ask a lot of questions to check for comprehension.

  6. Choose books based on your child’s interests.

  7. Read everything! Have your child read out loud billboards, signs, maps, etc.

Learning does not have to be stressful or dull. Make this year exciting with these fun activities! And of course, if you feel that your students are not reaching their full potential in the classroom, contact our team at Harper Educational Consultants.
