6 Tips To Make Time For Independent Reading

According to recent studies, many educators feel there is not enough time set aside for independent reading. And with the addition of remote learning, it has become even more of a challenge.

Independent reading offers many benefits to students in the classroom. We’ve seen an increase in engagement, stronger reading skills, and students are even more excited to share about what they’ve learned. While these are just a few of the benefits of independent reading, we can’t afford to leave this highly important learning tool out of our curricula.

Here are a few tips to incorporate and make time for independent reading.

1. Reading Buddies

Do your students have reading buddies? Trying pairing them up with another classmate. They can read together quietly, take turns reading to each other or simply discuss what they are reading on a regular basis.

2. Set Up Dedicated Time

This one might sound like a no-brainer but being intentional about setting aside time to read can easily slip through the cracks. Start by choosing a time of the day to read and stay consistent.

3. Audio Books

This is a great tool to help your students hear fluent reading and learn to model after it!

4. Ebooks

Since your students are already online, why not take advantage of ebooks?

There are many free resources out there to help them grow!

5. Reading Challenge

Let your students set personal reading goals or make a list of 5 different books they would like to read by a certain date.

6. Share What You Are Reading

Share your reading life with your students! There’s no greater opportunity to model this behavior than to take about what you are reading currently and to expound on some of your favorite reads!

One of the most critical skills for success in academics is the ability to read well. We hope these tips will help you create space during your day to help your students reach their full potential!
